Pattern: Tak board

Tak is an elegant two-player strategy game invented and designed by James Ernest (Cheapass Games) and Patrick Rothfuss (author The Wise Man’s Fear).
Rules available for free here.

I've made a 6x6 hybrid board - it will play a 3x3 and a 5x5 game on the squares or a 4x4 or a 6x6 game on the line intersections.

You'll need 3 colors of yarn: Center A, Center B, and Border: I've used yellow, blue and brown worsted weight.  You'll need 150 to 200 yards of each center color and 50-100 yards of border color.
and a crochet hook.  I used a D (3mm), which made a pretty solid fabric.

For each square:
Foundation: With Center color, chain 4, join to form a circle.
Round 1: Ch. 3, 2 dc, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 2) 3 times, sl st to join to the 3rd chain stitch. TURN.
Round 2: Starting in the ch2 space, Ch 3, 2 dc in space, ch 2 to form corner, 3 dc in same space, (3 dc in next space, ch 2 to form corner, 3 dc in same space) 3 times, sl st to join to the 3rd chain stitch. Break off yarn. Do not turn.
Round 3: Grab your Border yarn and attach it to the chain-2-space in one of the corners. Ch. 3, 1 dc, ch 2, 2 dc, *work 1 dc in each of next 3 dcs, 1 dc in between each set of  3dc and 1 dc into each of next 3 dcs. (7 dc in each solid section, not counting with the corners), (2 dc in space, ch 2, 2 dc in same space) to form corner.* Work around, ending with a solid section. join to first ch3 and fasten off.

Make 9 with Center A color and 16 in Center B color.
Seam all Center A colors into a 3x3 grid.  Seam Center B colors in a border around the Center A grid.

Optional Border: using center A color, join anywhere on the outside edge and place 1sc in each dc stitch around outside.  Place (1 sc. ch1, 1 sc) in each of the 4 outside corner chain spaces. Join to first sc and fasten off.
using center B color, join anywhere on the outside edge and place 1sc in each sc stitch around outside.  Place (1 sc. ch1*, 1 sc) in each of the 4 outside corner chain spaces. Join to first sc and fasten off.
* If you'd like your board to work as a draw string bag, place 4ch above each seam around your board when doing your final border row and replace the ch1 at the corners with a ch4.  Weave a piece of string or ribbon through the ch4 holes and pull tight to make a bag.

Pieces: I based my playing pieces off of the crocodile stitch pattern.  They will lay flat, but if gently folded in the middle will also stand up.
For Ea. Piece:
ch 4, dc into first ch to make a loop.
ch2 (does not count as a stitch), dc 5 times around the dc side of loop, ch 1, then dc 5 times around ch side of loop. Turn.
Ch2, dc in ea of first 5 dcs; (dc, ch1, dc) in ch1 space; dc in ea of next 5 dcs.  Fasten off and weave in ends.
To play on the 6x6 board, you will need 30 pieces in each of two colors - a total of 60 pieces.
You will also need two capstones.

Capstones: make 1 in ea color.
I thought it would be funny if the capstones looked like little caps.
magic loop (or ch 4 and join in a circle)
ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), make 10 DC in the loop, join to first dc.
ch1, (2 sc in next st, 1 st in next st) around. Join to first sc.
Ch1, sc in ea stitch around. Join to first sc.
ch1, 2sc in back loop of ea of next 4 st, join to both loops of next st.
fasten off and weave in ends.
